Designing the Cancer Nutrition Consortium Cookbook

A 100+ page collection of recipes and resources to help keep those in cancer treatment / recovery fed and nourished.

We worked with the Cancer Nutrition Consortium to create a specialized cookbook that features 45 of their expertly-crafted recipes and is specifically designed for those undergoing cancer treatment / recovery.

Each recipe featured in the cookbook met the CNC’s rigorous recipe standards created by chefs, nutritionists, oncologists and cancer patients.

All purchases are considered a charitable donation and all proceeds go towards funding future CNC projects.

Recipes the Make a Difference

Many of the recipes in the cookbook were developed by professional chefs, in conjunction with oncology dietitians at the nation’s leading cancer treatment institutions, including:

  1. The Dana Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center
  2. The Mayo Clinic Cancer Center
  3. Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center
  4. New York University Langone’s Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Cancer Center
  5. The Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins

Based on the results of the groundbreaking unprecedented multicenter clinical research study conducted by the CNC, each recipe included in this cookbook was designed to address issues that cancer patients typically confront, which often interfere with getting enough good nutrition, including difficulty swallowing and the need for mild flavors.

Using the system of nutrition indicators already available on the organization’s website, each recipe in the book is likewise coded for specific nutritional needs, including heart health, high-protein, and energy boosting.

The Attention Span crew worked with some of our partner photographers and the CNC to generate new creative for some of the recipes as well which was doubly useful as we were able to update the organization’s website with the creative and use the new photos for a ton of communications efforts.

Designing with a Purpose

Our design team knew right away that — like the CNC itself — the cookbook needed to do an equally good job of conveying a sense of professionalism and established expertise while also making it feel like the book was approachable and accessible. At the same time time, it needed to feel like an extension of the CNC itself. Some decisions were easy as we had already made them when refreshing the organization’s branding a few years prior. Fonts, colors, and other design elements were our starting point and with them we were off.

After some sketching and layout experimentation we decided on our direction — organizing all the recipe information while maintaining a balance between friendly and professional.

The Launch

Once the book was completed and published it was launched to great fanfare, being Covered by the Palm Beach Post, and making the rounds on Social media. The book is also available on the Cancer Nutrition Consortium’s website, Amazon, and has been placed in several independent bookstores as well as in the shops at a number of the CNC’s partner organizations like Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
